PEDESTRIAN/ DRIVER SAFETY TIPS TO HELP MAKE PALMDALE ROADS SAFER

Recently, the city of Palmdale has seen an influx traffic related collisions resulting in fatalities. Please take a moment and review these safety tips to help make our roads safer.

Pedestrians

  1. Walk on sidewalks whenever they are available. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and as far from traffic as possible.
  2. Be predictable. Follow the rules of the road and obey signs and signals. You need to be aware of the rules vehicles around you must follow to properly anticipate what drivers will do.
  3. Keep alert at all times; don’t be distracted by electronic devices that take your eyes (and ears) off the road.
  4. Whenever possible, cross streets at crosswalks or intersections, where drivers expect pedestrians. Look for cars in all directions, including those turning left or right.
  5. If a crosswalk or intersection is not available, locate a well-lit area where you have the best view of traffic. Wait for a gap in traffic that allows enough time to cross safely; continue watching for traffic as you cross.
  6. Never assume a driver sees you or a driver will give you the right of way. Make eye contact with drivers as they approach to make sure you are seen.
  7. Be visible at all times. Wear bright clothing during the day, and wear reflective materials or use a flashlight at night.
  8. Watch for cars entering or exiting driveways, or backing up in parking lots.
  9. Avoid alcohol and drugs when walking; they impair your abilities and your judgment.
  10. Avoid walking along highways or other roadways where pedestrians are prohibited.

Drivers
  1. Don’t speed, follow the speed limit and never use your phone; always be cautious of your surroundings.
  2. Never drive under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
  3. Look out for pedestrians, especially in hard-to-see conditions such as at night or in bad weather.
  4. Pedestrians have the right of way at any crosswalk or intersection, so yield and be prepared to stop.
  5. Stop at the crosswalk stop line to give drivers in other lanes an opportunity to see and yield to pedestrians too.
  6. Be cautious when backing up – pedestrians, especially young children, can move across your path.
