Vehicle Collision Results in a Fatality

Turlock Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) is currently investigating a fatal vehicle collision which occurred at the intersection of E. Hawkeye Avenue and N. Olive Avenue last night, July 25, 2019, in Turlock. In addition, the ambulance which was transporting the patient to an area hospital was involved in a vehicle collision at N. Golden State Boulevard and W. Monte Vista Avenue.

At about 9:12 p.m., the Turlock Police Department received phone calls about a vehicle vs. bicyclist collision at the intersection of N. Olive Avenue and E. Hawkeye Avenue. The preliminary investigation revealed that the bicyclist, a male in his sixties, was on his bike heading south on N. Olive Avenue. As he was crossing E. Hawkeye Avenue, he was struck by a vehicle which was headed east, driven by a nineteen-year old female. The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and has been cooperative with the investigation. As the investigation is still on going, cause has not yet been established.

The bicyclist received life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision and was being transported by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment. Due to the severity of his injuries, E.M.S. personnel requested the assistance of two Turlock Firefighters to accompany them to the hospital.

At about 9:33 p.m., while en route to the hospital, the ambulance was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of N. Golden State Boulevard and W. Monte Vista Avenue. This impact of the collision caused the ambulance to roll over on its side. Injuries sustained by those involved in this accident ranged from moderate to severe. The bicyclist was transported in another ambulance to an area hospital where despite life saving measures, he succumbed to his injuries. The two Turlock Firefighters were treated and evaluated at a local hospital and have since been released. The ambulance staff was also transported to area hospitals. Please refer to AMR for their current conditions.

The preliminary investigation into this collision has revealed that the ambulance was heading west on W. Monte Vista Avenue with its lights and siren activated. The driver of a Toyota truck, a sixty-two year old male, was heading south on N. Golden State Boulevard when he struck the ambulance.

Turlock Police Department would like to thank the California Highway Patrol for their assistance in the investigation of this second collision. In addition to their assistance, several citizens who witnessed this collision stopped to offer assistance during this time. The Turlock Police Department would like to thank those citizens who assisted with directing traffic and aiding personnel as they tended to those injured.

Chief Amirfar commented, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased and all those involved in these two collisions.
