Press Release: Sex and Arson Registrant Compliance Checks

PRESS RELEASE

CALIFORNIA SEX AND ARSON REGISTRANT
COMPLIANCE CHECKS

DATE: July 25, 2019
LOCATION: City of Milpitas

On Thursday July 25, 2019, the Milpitas Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Bureau and Special Investigations Unit coordinated a citywide sex and arson registrant compliance check. With assistance from the Santa Clara County Probation Department – Sex Offender Unit, Santa Clara County Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement (S.A.F.E.) Team, and the US Marshal’s service, 93 address verification and compliance checks of known registered offenders were conducted.

The goal of the operation was to ensure individuals required to register pursuant to a criminal conviction for qualifying sex and arson offenses were providing accurate registration information to the Milpitas Police Department as required by California State law.

Detectives, Officers, and Agents that participated in the compliance checks were not wearing traditional police uniforms but were wearing apparel and protective equipment with law enforcement insignias affixed to them. The Milpitas Police Department is aware of some social media postings that were posted during or after the operation alluding to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement participating in the compliance checks. This is factually incorrect as there were no representatives from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement involved in the compliance checks.

The focus of the operation remained on registration compliance. The Milpitas Police Department does not inquire about a registrant’s immigration status during the check.

The Milpitas Police Department is committed to ensuring that all known registered offenders living within the City of Milpitas adhere to their registration requirements.
