DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 20, 2019 / 10:45 p.m.
INCIDENT: Traffic Collision – Power Outage
LOCATION: Central Avenue and Baseline Street, Highland
SUMMARY:
Deputies from the Highland Police Department responded to the intersection of Central Avenue and Baseline Street for a report of a traffic collision involving a single vehicle hitting a power pole.
Upon arriving at the location, deputies located the vehicle and the driver. Personnel from the fire department were tending to the driver’s injuries. There were no other occupants in the vehicle.
A preliminary investigation revealed the driver was traveling southbound on Central Avenue at an unknown speed. For reasons unknown, the driver lost control of his vehicle and left the roadway. The vehicle went onto the sidewalk, through landscaping on the west curb line of Central Avenue and struck a Southern California Edison power pole with transformers affixed to it. The impact of the vehicle hitting the base of the wooden pole caused the pole to break and to lean to its side. A loss of power was reported in the area for approximately 2 hours.
The driver was transported to a local hospital for treatment for his injuries. Deputies will investigate whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in this collision. The investigation is ongoing.
