Excessive Heat Warning until 08:00PM Saturday

The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued an Excessive Heat Warning, which is in effect from noon Friday to 8 PM EDT Saturday. The Excessive Heat Watch is no longer in effect.

* HEAT INDEX VALUES...Maximum heat index values from 101 to 107 Friday afternoon and from 103 to 110 Saturday afternoon due to high temperatures in the mid 90s, and dewpoints in the lower 70s. The highest heat index values will be in the lower elevations and urban areas.

* TIMING...Friday afternoon through Saturday evening.

* Impacts...The heat and humidity can cause heat illnesses during outdoor exertion or extended exposure or in non-air conditioned locations. Prolonged heat is most dangerous for young children and the elderly. Car temperatures can reach lethal temperatures in minutes. Temperatures will remain very warm and muggy Friday night, preventing non-air conditioned buildings from cooling off.

* AFFECTED AREAS: SULLIVAN ... SCHUYLER ... NORTHERN WAYNE ... MADISON ... SOUTHERN WAYNE ... BROOME ... PIKE ... LACKAWANNA ... BRADFORD ... CHEMUNG ... WYOMING ... SUSQUEHANNA ... TOMPKINS ... SOUTHERN CAYUGA ... SENECA ... TIOGA ... ONONDAGA ... LUZERNE ... CHENANGO ... SOUTHERN ONEIDA ... YATES ... CORTLAND ... STEUBEN

Instructions:

An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible...reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.
