Advisory

TRAFFIC ADVISORY - Thunderstorms and flooding expected today with excessive heat and humidity predicted for Saturday and Sunday

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports that thunderstorms are predicted today, beginning after 1 p.m., possibly producing gusty winds and heavy rain.

Showers and thunderstorms are also expected tonight with gusty winds and heavy rain. Thunderstorms are likely before midnight on Thursday.

Many streets may be flooded and should be avoided. Because motorists can become stranded by driving through flooded streets and high water, drivers are asked to avoid the below locations and to use alternative routes. Drivers are also discouraged from traveling through any streets that are flooded, have high water or are believed to be flooded.

The pictured locations should be avoided due to flooding conditions or the potential for flooding.

The Department of Public Safety is coordinating responses to burglar alarms, flooding conditions and other weather-related incidents through the combined use of Police, Fire and Office of Emergency Management Personnel. Special attention should be given to unsecured outdoor furniture, awnings, refuse and building materials. For fire safety, please utilize flashlights, instead of candles, should you lose electricity due to this weather event.

Excessive heat and humidity are predicted for Saturday and Sunday, with temperatures expected between the mid-90s to 100 degrees along with maximum heat index values between 105 and 110 degrees. The City of Newark’s Cooling Centers and Public Pools are available for residents during this week’s heatwave and are listed in the attached photos.

All branches of the Newark Public Library will also serve as cooling stations. Check your local branch for hours of operation at: https://npl.org/about-the-library/hours/.
Members of the homeless community may utilize Newark Pennsylvania Station as a Cooling Center when they are near that location.

The Newark Fire Division will open hydrants when a request is made in person by an adult. Kindly visit your local firehouse to make a formal request.

Additional tips for staying cool include:

• Drinking plenty of fluids
• Sheltering in place inside an air-conditioned room
• Avoiding prolonged periods in the sun
• Wearing light-weight, loose fitting clothing
• Rescheduling strenuous activities to cooler temperatures or during the morning or evening hours

Seniors and young children are especially susceptible to heat-related illness. Those who care for them are advised to regularly check on them and to bring them to the cooling centers.

Call 911 if you or someone you know is suffering from heat exhaustion, heat stroke or other heat-related illness.
