The crew of Air Rescue 306 conducted a hoist rescue on Mt. Baldy for an injured hiker

INCIDENT: Hoist Rescue
LOCATION: Mount Baldy
VICTIM: Kyle Jeefoong Chan, 23 years old
SUMMARY:
On July 13th, Kyle J. Chan hiked to the summit of Mount Baldy with friends. On their way down, at the 6,100' level, Chan sustained a leg injury and was unable to walk. Knowing he couldn't descend any furher, Chan called 911 for help.
San Bernardino County Sheriff Department's helicopter, 40K1, responded and located Chan in a remote and rugged area of the mountain. The crew determined a hoist rescue would need to be conducted and requested Air Rescue 306.
San Bernardino County Sheriff Department's Air Rescue 306 responded to the location and lowered a rescue medic down to Chan. Chan was placed in a rescue harness and hoisted into the helicopter. He was then transported nearby to waiting medical personnel.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department would like to remind the public about the dangers of hiking in the local mountains. Without proper experience and preperation, this type of activity can lead to serious injury or death.
