Deputies recover a loaded 9mm semi-automatic firearm discarded by a suspect

DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 11, 2019 / 10:34 a.m.

INCIDENT: PC 29800(a)(1) – Felon in Possession of a Firearm / HS 11550(a) – Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance

LOCATION: 28000 block of Carriage Hill Drive, Highland

SUSPECT(S): #1 – Gerardo Cabrera, 30-year-old resident of North Dakota
#2 – Viola Colleen Grinnell, 36-year-old of North Dakota
SUMMARY:
On Thursday, July 11, 2019 at about 10:34 a.m., deputies from the Highland Police Station were dispatched to the 28000 Block of Carriage Hill Drive in reference to a suspicious male and female in the area. Deputies received an additional call of a disabled white Toyota Avalon on the center median associated with the subjects. Prior to arrival, the driver of the vehicle and female subject were in the backyard of a residence in the area.
Upon arrival, deputies detained Gerardo Cabrera, who matched the description of the male subject, nearby. Cabrera was in possession of three bags of property and was waiting for a ride from a transportation network company. A witness saw Cabrera discard what was believed to be a firearm in the area he was contacted. A search of the area was conducted and a loaded 9mm semi-automatic firearm was recovered. Cabrera’s bags contained numerous rounds of ammunition and high capacity gun magazines. Cabrera is a convicted felon in California and is prohibited from possessing a firearm. The investigation revealed the driver of the vehicle was Viola Colleen Grinnell, however she was not located at the time.
At about 6:39 p.m., deputies from the Highland Police Station Multiple Enforcement Team (MET) were dispatched to the 6600 Block of Fairway Lane in reference to an incoherent female who was wandering throughout the neighborhood. Deputies arrived at the location and discovered the female was Viola Grinnell. Grinnell was determined to be under the influence of a controlled substance and was arrested. She was booked into the Central Detention Center and issued a citation to appear in court.
Cabrera was arrested for PC 29800(a)(1), felon in possession of a firearm and booked into the Central Detention Center with a bail amount of $50,000.00. He is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in San Bernardino on July 15, 2019 to be arraigned for the charges.
