Car Burglaries - Stolen Car in Indian Lake Area

We are currently investigating three separate car burglaries and a stolen car that occurred overnight in the Shawger Road area of Indian Lake. A credit card stolen from one of the vehicles has already been used to make fraudulent purchases. In addition, a vehicle that was stolen from another town was recovered in the area.

In each case, the affected vehicles were left unlocked, to include both of the stolen cars. Both stolen cars also had their ignition keys left inside them. We can not stress enough that you need to lock your vehicles and remove all valuables, to include GPS devices, credit cards and especially the car keys, every night regardless if you are parked on the street or in your driveway. The current rash of car burglaries and thefts affecting our area have all involved unlocked vehicles. Help prevent yourself from becoming a victim, please lock all of your vehicles!

With that in mind, we would like to remind everyone to participate in the #9pmroutine. Please set an alarm/reminder on your smart phone or other device that is set to go off each night at 9pm. This alarm will remind you to make sure your vehicles are locked and any valuables have been removed.

Also, if you should live in the Shawger Road area, please review your home security video, if equipped, for any suspicious activity occurring last night or early this morning. If you see anything out of the ordinary, please contact us at 973-627-4900 x 9 so that an officer can respond, view and possibly collect a copy of the video for evidence.

For those of you who do have home security video systems, please take a minute to register your system with our Virtual Crime Watch program. This is a database of available systems that may have captured criminal activity or those responsible for it in your neighborhood. It simply allows us to identify those residences or businesses that may have video, it does not grant us access to your system in any way. You can register by completing a form in the Online Forms section of our website, www.denvillepolice.org.

Please help us to keep Denville a safe and crime free community. Lock your vehicles and homes, keep a watchful eye out for anything or anyone suspicious in your neighborhood, and, most importantly, please notify of us right away when you do.
