SUMMARY:
On Friday, July 5, 2019, at 6:37 a.m., a deputy from San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department - Central Station attempted a traffic stop on a stolen BMW sedan on 3rd Street near Sterling Avenue in the city of San Bernardino. The driver of the BMW, Timothy Johnston, had a female passenger with him. Johnston fled at a high rate of speed and drove northbound on Palm Avenue from 3rd Street, not yielding to the emergency vehicle.
Johnston continued north on Palm Avenue and entered the city of Highland. Johnston lost control of the vehicle near the intersection of Palm Avenue and Nona Avenue. Johnston sideswiped a Toyota Tundra and then collided with a powerline pole, eventually coming to rest on its roof. Johnston exited the vehicle and ran from the collision scene. Deputies located Johnston hiding in a nearby neighborhood, and arrested him without incident. Deputies transported Johnston to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the collision. After treatment at the hospital, deputies booked Johnston at the Central Detention Center for Vehicular Manslaughter with Gross Negligence, Evading a Peace Officer with no Regard for Public Safety, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Vehicle Theft, Burglary, and for an unrelated no-bail warrant for vehicle theft.
AMR transported the female passenger in the BMW to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries sustained in the collision and was pronounced deceased. The release of the passenger's name is pending next of kin notification.
The driver and passenger of the Toyota Tundra of the collision suffered no injuries from the collision. Their information is not being released at this time to protect the ongoing felony criminal investigation.
