Man Arrested for DWI Under Leandra’s Law Following Crash

Suffolk County Police today arrested a man for Driving While Intoxicated under Leandra’s Law after he was involved in a crash in Huntington with his 13-year-old nephew in his vehicle.
 
Gene Hamid was driving a 1994 Dodge Dakota northbound on Clinton Avenue when the vehicle crashed into a 2019 Jeep Cherokee travelling eastbound on Gerard Street at approximately 3:50 p.m.  Two of the four occupants of the Jeep sustained minor injuries, and were transported to Huntington Hospital for treatment.
 
Hamid and his nephew were not injured. Hamid was arrested at the scene at approximately 4:45 p.m. The 13-year-old was released to the custody of a family member. The Dodge Dakota was impounded.
 
Second Squad detectives charged Hamid, 60, of 21 Winoka Drive, Huntington Station, with Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a Child Passenger 15 Years Old or Younger (Leandra’s Law), and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Hamid is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on July 6.
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
