News Release: Structure Fire at Condominium Construction Site

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, June 28, 2019

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara Fire Department crews responded to a 4-alarm fire at a condominium construction site, located at 1890 El Camino Real, after receiving multiple reports of large plumes of smoke from the area around 11 a.m. Friday, June 28. When firefighters arrived on scene, they found the four-story structure was fully engulfed. Mutual aid from fire departments throughout Santa Clara County also assisted in putting out the flames.

As a precaution, 10 nearby houses were temporarily evacuated. Thanks to light winds, firefighters were able to get the upper hand and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby single-family homes.

“Once again, the City of Santa Clara’s first responders saved the day,” said Mayor Lisa M. Gillmor. “Specifically, their heroic actions saved the adjacent neighborhood from what could have been a true catastrophe for many of our residents. I want to personally thank our Fire personnel for their quick and attentive response and our Police Department for assisting with the evacuation and much more.”

Fire crews declared the fire contained by 2 p.m. However, firefighters remain on scene to monitor and extinguish hot spots throughout the structure. El Camino Real, between Lincoln Street and Scott Boulevard, will remain closed until further notice. Detours are in place.

According to fire officials, one worker at the construction site suffered a non-life-threatening injury and was transported to a local hospital.

The fire broke out this morning at the 1890 El Camino Real Residential Project. The Anantara Villas was projected to have a total of 56 units over a podium parking structure. The project was in the rough framing stage and approximately 25% complete.

The fire’s cause remains under investigation.
