KNOW YOUR RIGHTS DURING AN IMMIGRATION EMERGENCY

This weekend the L.A. County Department of Consumer and Business Affairs (DCBA) and its Office of Immigrant Affairs (OIA) will open four dedicated help lines to assist residents by answering questions and addressing concerns in the wake of federal plans to step up immigration enforcement action. Southern California callers can be connected to local legal aid resources, County services, and can learn more about how your family should respond in the event of an immigration emergency. 

OIA urges residents to know their rights during an immigration emergency. You have certain rights and protections under the U.S. Constitution. If an immigration agent comes to your home, workplace, or stops you on the street, know your rights:

RIGHT TO NOT OPEN YOUR DOOR unless the immigration agent knocking has a warrant to enter that is signed by a judge or magistrate and has your name on it.

RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT and not answer questions from immigration agents.

RIGHT NOT TO SIGN ANY PAPERS without first talking to an attorney.

RIGHT TO TALK TO AN ATTORNEY at your own expense.

IF YOU ARE OUTSIDE YOUR HOME: Ask the immigration agent if you are free to go. If they say yes, leave peacefully. If they say no, ask to call your attorney.

CONOZCA SUS DERECHOS DURANTE UNA EMERGENCIA DE INMIGRACIÓN

Este fin de semana, el Departamento de Asuntos de Consumidores y Negocios (DCBA) del Condado de Los Ángeles y su Oficina de Asuntos de Inmigrantes (OIA, por sus siglas en inglés) abrirán cuatro líneas de ayuda dedicadas para ayudar a los residentes respondiendo preguntas y abordando inquietudes a raíz de los planes federales para aumentar la acción de inmigración. . OIA insta a los residentes a conocer sus derechos durante una emergencia de inmigración. Usted tiene ciertos derechos y protecciones bajo la Constitución de los Estados Unidos. Si un agente de inmigración llega a su hogar, lugar de trabajo o lo detiene en la calle, conozca sus derechos:

DERECHO A NO ABRIR SU PUERTA a menos que el agente de inmigración que llama la puerta tenga una orden de entrada firmada por un juez o magistrado y tenga su nombre en ella.

DERECHO A PERMANECER EN SILENCIO y no contestar preguntas de agentes de inmigración.

DERECHO A NO FIRMAR NINGÚN PAPEL sin primero hablar con un abogado.

DERECHO A HABLAR CON UN ABOGADO a su cargo.

SI ESTÁ FUERA DE SU CASA: pregúntele al agente de inmigración si puede irse. Si dicen que sí, vete en paz. Si dicen que no, solicite llamar a su abogado.
