REMINDER - PARKING ADVISORY - Newark to Begin Enforcing Street Cleaning Parking Rules

Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced a plan to enforce the city’s long-standing streets cleaning rules.

As of May 1st, cars left overnight or on Sundays on roads scheduled for street cleaning were given warning tickets.

On July 1, the warning period will end and the city will commence towing and ticketing cars in violation of the street cleaning ordinance.

“Clean streets are evidence of a healthy city,” Mayor Baraka said. “Clean streets are evidence of order. Our residents deserve that.”

Ambrose said the slow roll-out of the program was to give residents a chance to acclimate to the enforcement of the rules.

“These rules have been in place for a long time, but they haven’t been strictly enforced,” Ambrose said. “We don’t want to come right out and start towing cars, but we want people to know that we’re taking it seriously. So we’ll give warnings for two months, so they can get used to the idea.”

Street signs displaying the “No Parking” restrictions are already posted, but residents can find a list of streets and cleaning times on the Newark Parking Authority website at: www.newarkparking.org. Go to FAQs, then Alternate Parking Rules, Chapter 5.
