Statement from Mayor Bhalla on Northwest Park contract | Rebuild by Design park survey

Northwest Resiliency Park

Last night, the City of Hoboken awarded a contract to Tomco Construction, Inc. for construction of the 5 acre Northwest Resiliency Park, which will become Hoboken’s largest park. With this contract now awarded, the City is on track to break ground on the construction of the park in fall 2019.

“I am extremely pleased that we have cleared this major milestone for our Northwest Resiliency Park with the award of a construction contract,” said Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla. “This park will become a model for the rest of the State with its above and below ground flood mitigation infrastructure, while providing state-of-the-art open space amenities for our community.  Thank you to the City Council for voting in support of the construction contract, and thank you to our partners at the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and New Jersey Infrastructure Bank for providing low-interest financing that will save the City millions of dollars.”

The Northwest Park’s final design, based on feedback from the community includes an athletic field, open lawn space, park pavilion and shade structure, ice skating rink, spray water feature, playground equipment for children of all ages, lowland gardens, and more. It also includes above ground green infrastructure and an underground detention system which together will withhold up to 2 million gallons of rainwater to help reduce flooding in Northwest Hoboken.

Rebuild by Design/Hoboken Cove Park survey

As a reminder, residents are invited to provide feedback on two updated park concepts (meadow, ridge) for Harborside Cove Park that were presented at the June 6th public meeting held at Elysian Charter School. Renderings and scale models of the two park concepts are also available for viewing on the first floor of City Hall. The survey on those options can be accessed by clicking here. The two concepts contain above ground flood infrastructure within a park that will protect Hoboken from storm surge as a part of the $230 million federally funded project. The Rebuild by Design project is being administered by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

The public survey will be open until Sunday, June 30. For more information on the presentation at the public meeting including renderings and park concepts, click here. (scroll down the webpage to the “Public Meetings” section).
