DETAILS: At 0050 Hours on 6/10/2019, WWPD was contacted by Plainsboro Township PD in reference to a male that was transported to the Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased. Initial investigation revealed that the incident originated in West Windsor Township. Further investigation by Plainsboro Township PD indicated the victim had been at a residence in the Golden Estates Development and had been transported to the hospital by friends. Due to unknown circumstances as to the victim’s death, the WWPD’s Detective Bureau and, later, the Mercer County Homicide Taskforce were contacted to continue the investigation.
As a result of the combined efforts of all investigators, it was determined that the male had fatally overdosed on Heroin. It was further determined that the friends of the victim did not call for any emergency response, although, they provided their own life saving measures and private transportation to the hospital for the victim.
Chief Garofalo offers his condolences to the victim’s family and friends for this tragic incident. Chief Garofalo would like to take the time to share information that could be valuable to our community: WWPD is open 24/7/365 to offer assistance through our CARE Program with our partners from City of Angels and Recovery Advocates of America. If you or a loved one needs help with an addiction, we are here to provide assistance to you without fear of prosecution. The “Overdose Prevention Act-2013” provides immunity to those who are seeking medical assistance for either themselves or someone else. The following excerpt is from New Jersey Acting Attorney General Hoffman’s Directive dated July 2, 2013:
“Consistent with the spirit of the law and its overriding purpose to reduce disincentives to seeking prompt medical help, where it can reliably be determined that two or more persons were present at the time that the request for medical assistance was made and were aware of and participating in that request, police and prosecutors should proceed as if those persons had collaborated in making the request for medical assistance, even though only one of them actually placed the call to the 9-1-1 emergency system or otherwise made the request for medical assistance. Persons who in this manner collaborated in making the request for medical assistance should not be arrested or prosecuted for an offense [for which immunity is granted under the law].”
The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, West Windsor Township PD, City of Angels, and Recovery Advocates of America stand together in the ongoing battle against the Opioid Epidemic. We firmly believe in education, training, providing aid, and lastly enforcing laws against those who are selling these lethal drugs. Chief Garofalo and WWPD’s hope is that K9 Hodge will continue his excellent work in removing fatal drugs off of the streets. We are all in this fight together.
