IMPD East District Commander graduates from FBI National Academy

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) is proud to announce that East District Commander Craig McCartt has graduated from the FBI National Academy!

The FBI National Academy is a professional course of study for U.S. and international law enforcement managers nominated by their agency heads because of demonstrated leadership qualities. The 10-week program—which provides coursework in intelligence theory, terrorism and terrorist mindsets, management science, law, behavioral science, law enforcement communication, and forensic science—serves to improve the administration of justice in police departments and agencies at home and abroad and to raise law enforcement standards, knowledge, and cooperation worldwide (FBI.gov).

“I want to express my appreciation for Commander Craig McCartt’s hard work and dedication at the FBI National Academy,” stated Chief Bryan Roach. “His graduation marks self-improvement for Craig and an opportunity for IMPD to receive of his leadership skills.  I am grateful for his family’s support during his absence and the support of his East District leadership team and officers keeping efforts moving in the right direction. “

Commander Craig McCartt joined the Indianapolis Police Department in 1995.  Commander McCartt was promoted to the merit rank of Sergeant in 2001.  His assignments included South District Shift Supervisor, District Detective Supervisor, Mayor Security Detail Supervisor and Sex Crimes Supervisor.
 
In 2014, Commander McCartt was promoted to the merit rank of Lieutenant and assigned to the Robbery/Aggravated Assault Unit as the unit supervisor. In 2016 Commander McCartt was assigned as the Homicide Unit Supervisor. While as a lieutenant, Commander McCartt worked closely with local retail pharmacies and supervised the investigative unit that significantly reduced pharmacy robberies in Marion County. In 2017 Commander McCartt was appointed to Major over the Investigations Division. In 2019, he was appointed to Commander of IMPD East District. He also traveled to Armenia to provide investigative training to the Armenian National Police.
 
Commander McCartt was appointed to the Citizen’s Police Complaint Board in 2011 where he served for six years.  In 2016 Major McCartt was appointed to the Sexual Assault Victim Advocate Board by former Governor Mike Pence. 
 
Commander McCartt is a recipient of the Medal of Valor, Medal of Merit, Unit Citation and Ruthann Popcheff Award. Craig is a 1991 graduate of Indiana University (Bloomington, IN) and is married with 2 children. Craig is also a member of Mt. Pleasant Christian Church.
