Big Saturday at Apodaca Park: activities include BBQ Cookoff and Cornhole Tournament to benefit New Mexico Special Olympics.

Big Saturday Planned at Apodaca Park

Saturday will be a fun-filled day with activities for the entire family at Apodaca Park – including the Las Cruces Police Department’s first-ever Backyard BBQ Cookoff and Cornhole Tournament with proceeds benefiting New Mexico Special Olympics.

Besides the BBQ Cookoff and Cornhole Tournament, LCPD will have its Mobile Operation Center parked at the park so residents can meet with officers and discus any law enforcement concerns they may have. The day-long event will also feature an Ident-A-Child for children, a Check-the-Chip for pets, an LCPD K-9 demonstration, Bicycle Rodeo, Poison Control Awareness, recycling tips with Libby the Dog, and the Las Cruces Fire Department will hold a hands-only CPR clinic. DJ Mike Gamboa will provide music during the event.

Registration for the Backyard BBQ Cookoff begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 15, at Apodaca Park, 801 W. Madrid Street. Chefs can begin cooking their best pork or beef ribs at 9 a.m. with judging to begin at 3 p.m. The entry fee for the cookoff is $50 per entry with prizes to be awarded to the champion chef. Participants must provide their own grill and ribs for the cookoff.

Special Olympics athletes and local celebrities will serve as judges for the cookoff.

Registration for the Cornhole Tournament will start at 9 a.m. that day with the tournament is set to begin at 10 a.m. The double-elimination, two-person team tournament has a $40 entry fee and prizes will be awarded to the top three teams. Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in both the BBQ Cookoff and Cornhole Tournament.

Proceeds from the Backyard BBQ Cookoff and Cornhole Tournament benefit New Mexico Special Olympics. T-shirts and other items will be available for purchase, and donations can be made to New Mexico Special Olympics.

As with all City parks, alcohol is not permitted during the event.
