SUMMARY:
On Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at about 7:39 p.m., deputies and a San Bernardino County Probation Officer assigned to the Highland Police Department Multiple Enforcement Team were in the area of Palm Avenue and Atlantic Avenue in the city Highland when they observed two occupants in a 2016 silver Honda Civic that was reported stolen to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Central Station on June 3, 2019.
Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle when the passenger, Nicholas Robert Konikow, opened the door and fled on foot. Konikow ran through the backyards of several residences. The driver, Daniel Lee Reichtell, a documented gang member, was taken into custody without further incident.
Konikow was captured and arrested in a backyard in the 27000 block of Pacific Avenue. Konikow, a documented gang member on active adult formal felony probation, had a warrant for his arrest for absconding from probation. He sustained injuries to his hand as a result of climbing over a barbed wire fence. He was treated for his injuries at the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.
During the investigation, it was discovered that Konikow was responsible for the theft of the vehicle. Suspected narcotics were found inside the vehicle. Konikow was booked into the West Valley Detention Center for VC 10851(a), vehicle theft and a violation of his probation. Reichtell was booked into the Central Detention Center for PC 496D(a), possession of a stolen vehicle.
