Traffic Safety Initiatives Produce Results

South Brunswick Police Chief Raymond Hayducka announced the results of a series of traffic safety initiatives the police department has undertaken. “Our goal is to improve the safety of our community through increased awareness, education, and enforcement. We have conducted several efforts targeting impaired driving, pedestrian safety, and seatbelt usage. These efforts have been a huge success,” said Chief Hayducka.

Driving While Impaired Checkpoint
On June 1, 2019 South Brunswick Police in conjunction with the Middlesex County Prosecutors Office conducted a DWI Checkpoint on Route 1.  The checkpoint resulted in 1 drunk driving arrest and 1 arrest for possession of a controlled dangerous substance. Over 400 cars passed through the checkpoint from 11pm to 4am. The lack of impaired drivers was a direct result of people using Uber or Lyft services. Officers noted that nearly 25% of all the cars coming through the checkpoint were ride sharing services.

Chief Hayducka said, “We saw first-hand a shift in thinking by people that reduced the number of impaired drivers. In previous years it was not uncommon to see as many as 5 arrests for drunk driving at a checkpoint. There was a large country concert and several Princeton University events going on nearby, but only one arrest for DWI. People were responsible and used ride sharing services such as Uber and Lift to get them home.”

Pedestrian Safety Grant
A year long Pedestrian Safety Initiative ended on May 31, 2019.  The initiative looked to focus on drivers failing to stop for pedestrian in crosswalks. A grant from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety allowed for extra officers to target specific problem areas. In total 329 motor vehicle were stopped and 45 summonses were issued for Failure to Yield to a Pedestrian in a Marked Crosswalk.

“We want to raise awareness of pedestrians and bicyclist on Township roadways. Last year there were 15 crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists and we believe the added enforcement will improve safety,” said Chief Hayducka.

Click It of Ticket
The South Brunswick Police Department's Click it or Ticket campaign came to an end on June 2. The goal of the campaign was to promote widespread seat belt use by drivers and passengers. The high visibility patrols resulted in 225 motor vehicle stops and 147 summonses. This annual nationwide campaign has resulted in an increase in seatbelt wearing and reduced fatalities. The campaign was funded by a grant from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety which allowed for 100 of targeted patrols.
