Tips for a Safe Memorial Day

The Memorial Day holiday weekend is upon us! As millions of Americans head out to celebrate with friends and family, the Danville Police Department has some tips for safe driving during this very busy travel weekend.

1. Do not drink and drive. If you will be celebrating with alcohol, choose a designated, sober driver ahead of time or arrange to take public transit or a taxi.
2. Always wear your seatbelt, regardless of your position in a vehicle. Drivers, front passengers, and rear passengers should always buckle up before driving. Use appropriate car seats for infants and children.
3. Eliminate distractions while driving. Do not use headphones or otherwise impair your ability to hear what is going on around you. Keep cell phones tucked away to avoid temptation and enable hands free call options.
4. Allow extra travel time. It is more important to arrive safely, than to arrive at your desired time.
5. If you will be in the car for a long time, make time for brief stops so you can get out of the car and stretch or walk. This will help you stay alert on the roads.
6. Keep your vehicle in good repair. Check tire pressure and oil levels before you hit the road. Make sure all lights on your vehicle are functioning. Fill up your gas tank.
7. Get plenty of rest between long periods of driving. Consider taking turns with another driver or stop to rest if you feel tired.

Have a wonderful and safe Memorial Day weekend!
