CMPD is asking the public for information on a traffic collision involving two pedestrians, leaving one in critical condition

Yesterday, May 22, 2019, at about 3:53 p.m., Costa Mesa Police Department (CMPD) officers responded to a traffic collision involving a dump truck versus two pedestrians at Anaheim Avenue between 19th Streetand Plumer Street. The pedestrians, a 72-year-old man from Costa Mesa, and his caretaker, a 53-year-old woman from Anaheim, were crossing the street in the crosswalk when the collision occurred. The man, who is dependent on his electric wheelchair, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Hoag Hospital for treatment. His wheelchair is now inoperable. His caretaker sustained serious injuries and was transported to Orange County Global Medical Center, were she is still in critical condition. She had recently just started her job as his caretaker.

This is an active investigation and our Major Accident Investigation Team responded to the scene. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police. No arrest was made. There was a partial road closure in the area from the time CMPD responded to about 11:00 p.m.
