The Morristown Bureau of Police would again like to remind our residents to be aware of the prepaid gift card or Green Dot MoneyPak scams impacting our area. Be vigilant, not a victim!

The typical scam involves being contacted by someone claiming to be a creditor, the IRS, or someone tied to a particular person or event you are familiar with. The person on the other end demands immediate payment via Green Dot MoneyPak or other prepaid gift cards. They may threaten legal action, being cut off of service, or physical violence.

Be suspicious of callers who demand immediate payment for any reason.

Remember that anyone who has the number on the prepaid gift card or a GreenDot MoneyPak has access to the funds on the cards.

Never give out personal or financial information to anyone who emails or calls you unsolicited.

Utility companies and government agencies will not contact you demanding immediate payment by gift card or GreenDot MoneyPak.

Scammers sometimes send false IRS emails to victims before calling them to scam them. If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.

Also be cautious of email account take over scams. These may include an email request received from your company's CEO or CFO to request payment by gift cards; verify those requests with supervisors. Another scam might involve your plan to conduct a wire or electronic bank transfers. Be cautious of an email requests with last minute changes to the payment instructions which has an accelerated time frame.

If you believe you are a victim of any of these scams, please notify your local police agency immediately.
