INCIDENT: Residential Burglary / Possession of Stolen Property
LOCATION: 7300 Block of Bonita Drive, Highland
SUSPECT: Zachary Joseph Veirs, age 30, Highland resident

SUMMARY:
On Tuesday, May 24th at 9:20 am, deputies from the Highland Police Department responded to a suspicious subject at a residence in the 7300 block of Bonita Drive. Residents in the area called Sheriff’s Dispatch after seeing the suspect, later identified as Zachary Veirs, in a neighbor’s yard.
Deputies Couret and Satterwhite arrived at the location while Veirs was still in the yard. When Veirs saw the deputies, he fled on foot carrying a small personal safe he had stolen from inside the residence. Veirs dropped the safe in another neighbor’s rear yard and continued to run from deputies.
Deputies set a perimeter around the two houses and eventually caught Veirs trying to climb over a wall that separated the two properties. He was arrested without further incident. Veirs had a backpack with him a deputies found a semi-automatic handgun that had been stolen from the residences. Additional property from inside the safe such as currency, collectable coins, jewelry and personal paperwork was also recovered and returned to the victim.
Veirs was booked into the West Valley Detention Center for Residential Burglary. His bail is set at $75,000 and he is scheduled for arraignment on May 23rd in Superior Court in San Bernardino.
