Law Enforcement Torch Run Set for May 24
Officers from all over southern New Mexico, including from the Las Cruces Police Department and Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office, will participate in the 2019 Law Enforcement Torch Run next Friday in support of the New Mexico Special Olympics summer games.
Officers from several southern New Mexico law enforcement agencies will participate in ‘legs’ of the Torch Run. The three legs will meet in Las Cruces before continuing their journey north to Albuquerque for the Special Olympics summer games that begin May 31.
Beginning at 7 a.m. Friday, May 24, officers from agencies within Dona Ana County will bicycle from Gadsden High School north along Highway 28 to the Dona Ana County Building at 845 N. Motel Blvd. They expect to arrive on Motel Boulevard about 10 a.m. At approximately 10:45 a.m. officers and other participants will run and bicycle along Picacho Avenue to Albert Johnson Park at Main Street.
T-shirts and other items will be available for purchase at Albert Johnson Park with proceeds benefiting New Mexico Special Olympics.
Area bicyclists or runners are encouraged to join in the event – either the 26-mile bicycle ride from Gadsden High School to the Dona Ana County Building or the 2.6-mile run to Albert Johnson Park. Those wishing to participate should call (575) 528-4517 to register or complete a registration form at www.sonm.org.
Spectators are encouraged to line the routes, safely staying off the roadways, and show their encouragement for the participants.
Area law enforcement personnel participate in several events throughout the year, including the Torch Run and several Tip-A-Cop fundraisers, that benefit local Special Olympics athletes.
