*2nd Update* #LASD Homicide Assisting Gardena PD with Officer-Involved Shooting
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau detectives are continuing the investigation into Gardena Police Department’s Officer-involved shooting which occurred on Monday, May 13, 2019, at approximately 9:54 p.m., on the 1700 block of West Rosecrans Avenue, Gardena.
Detectives have learned that during the Gardena Officer’s initial contact with the suspect, the officer gave verbal commands for the suspect to drop his knife, in order to detain him. When the suspect did not comply with the officer’s orders, the officer discharged his taser in order to subdue the suspect. The taser was ineffective and the suspect lunged at the Officer, at which time the Officer-involved shooting occurred. The identity of the suspect, who is deceased, remains unknown at this time.
The investigation is ongoing and there is no further information available at this time.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau detectives are assisting the Gardena Police Department in investigating the circumstances surrounding an officer-involved shooting which resulted in the death of Black, male adult. The incident occurred on Monday, May 13, 2019 at approximately 9:54 p.m., on the 1700 block of West Rosecrans Avenue in Gardena.
The preliminary investigation has revealed that the Gardena Police Department received a call of a man with a knife in the area.
While checking the area, a Gardena Officer located the suspect.
The officer attempted to contact the suspect, at which time the suspect lunged at the officer and an officer-involved shooting occurred. The officer discharged one round at the suspect.
The suspect was struck once in the upper torso and was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The suspect’s knife was located at the scene.
No officers were injured.
The investigation is ongoing and there is no additional information available at this time.
