This week, the Sheriff's Office coordinated with NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) to host crisis intervention training for area first responders at the Shelter Cove, Hilton Head Island substation. Concluding this afternoon, and at no cost to the agencies, NAMI instructors provided first responders with an overview of mental illnesses and verbal techniques to effectively communicate with individuals and families of those affected by mental illness.

In addition, class participants engaged in role playing scenarios similar to what they may encounter on calls for service. Executive Director of NAMI Lowcountry Sarah Eliasoph and Crisis Intervention Team Liaison Sherri Cloud of NAMI South Carolina provided participants with the training and the available resources to better prepare them to deal with issues surrounding mental illnesses in the future.
