Winter Storm Warning until 06:00PM Friday

CORRECTED TYPO IN FIRST SENTENCE OF DISCUSSION ...LATE SEASON SNOW SPREADING TO LOWER ELEVATIONS OF NORTH CENTRAL AND NORTHEAST NEW MEXICO TONIGHT INTO FRIDAY... .A broad storm system developing over the Great Basin will steer a disturbance northeastward across New Mexico tonight into Friday causing accumulating snow to spread to lower elevations of the upper Rio Grande Valley, northeast highlands and western parts of the northeast plains. Moist, easterly upslope flow has kept temperatures well below normal across north central and northeast New Mexico today, and low temperatures are expected to drop near and below freezing late tonight in places like Taos, Las Vegas, Raton, Roy and Grenville as precipitation becomes more widespread. A few inches of snow are expected at lower elevations, while as much as 10 inches of new snow accumulates in the northern mountains. Temperatures will warm above freezing again at lower elevations by mid day Friday. The storm system over the Great Basin will gradually cross southern New Mexico late this weekend and Monday with the potential for several more inches of snow accumulation in the mountains above 8000 feet.

* WHAT...Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations 6 to 10 inches with locally higher amounts around 12 inches on mountain peaks.

* WHERE...Northern Sangre de Cristos above 9500 feet including Red River and Southern Sangre de Cristos above 9500 feet.

* WHEN...Until 6 PM MDT Friday. The heaviest snow will fall tonight, then snow will gradually decrease in coverage and intensity on Friday. The snow level will lift near 8500 feet in the afternoon.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Travel could be very difficult.

* AFFECTED AREAS: SOUTHERN SANGRE DE CRISTOS ABOVE 9500 FEET ... NORTHERN SANGRE DE CRISTOS ABOVE 9500 FEET/RED RIVER
