DETAILS: On Monday, May 6th, 2019, at 9:08AM, Officers were stopped at the intersection of SE 2nd Ave and Taylor waiting on the light. The officers observed a Sanford Fritch school bus stopped at the red light at SE 2nd facing SB on Taylor. A second bus was travelling SB in the 100 block and was unable to stop in time and hit the other bus from behind. There were 81 people in the two buses at the time of the incident. 55 of the passengers were taken to local area hospitals via various means, including ambulance and private conveyance. The injuries were not life threatening. The buses were towed. South Taylor street was closed to traffic for several hours. The Amarillo PD Traffic Investigation Unit and Crime Scene Unit are investigating this incident. The investigation is ongoing. The street has opened back up to normal traffic.
