Showers and thunderstorms are expected to move across the watch area late this afternoon and tonight. Their heavy rain falling in a short period of time could yield flash flooding, especially considering some parts of this area have already received decent rains over the past 48 hours. The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a
* Flash Flood Watch for portions of southwest Virginia and southeast West Virginia, including the following areas, in southwest Virginia, Smyth and Tazewell. In southeast West Virginia, Eastern Greenbrier, Mercer, Monroe, Summers, and Western Greenbrier.
* From 5 PM EDT this afternoon through late tonight
* Showers and storms are expected to produce heavy rain in localized areas over a short period of time, potentially resulting in flash flooding.
* Creeks and streams may overrun their banks, potentially impacting life and property. Several inches deep of flowing water may make travel hazardous for motorists, especially in naturally low lying areas and in areas of sloped terrain.
* AFFECTED AREAS: WESTERN GREENBRIER ... MONROE ... MERCER ... TAZEWELL ... SMYTH ... EASTERN GREENBRIER ... SUMMERS
