Stolen vehicle in San Leandro carjacking case crashes into Castro Valley home

A stolen vehicle taken last night in a San Leandro carjacking incident crashed into a Castro Valley home just about one hour after the crime.

The carjacking incident occurred last night just before midnight in the 300 block of Estudillo Ave. The victim stated that he was sitting inside his vehicle which was parked in the parking lot of the San Leandro Main Library. The victim was on his phone talking to a friend and had his dog inside the car.

The victim stated that he saw four or five subjects in dark clothing approach his vehicle and suddenly smash a back window. The victim exited his vehicle and was confronted by the suspects who demanded his vehicle keys and cell phone.

The victim reached back into his vehicle to get his dog when he was stabbed in the back of his leg with a small knife. The victim was then kicked to the ground and further assaulted before he gave up his vehicle keys and cell phone. The suspects then got into the victim's car but before driving off, gave the victim his dog and cell phone.

The victim called 9-1-1 after the suspects fled and officers from the San Leandro Police department responded to the scene. Paramedics also arrived and treated the victim for his injury which was not life-threatening. Officers began to investigate and broadcasted the stolen vehicle information to surrounding law enforcement agencies.

A short time later, within an hour of the initial crime, officers learned that the victim's stolen car had crashed into a residence in Castro Valley. The circumstances around that incident are still under investigation, however, we know the stolen vehicle crashed into the house as a result of reckless driving and was not being pursued by any law enforcement.

It is also believed that the suspects are possibly related to a second carjacking incident that occurred in another jurisdiction which is currently under investigation.

A male teenager was detained a short time later following the crash and is being interviewed by detectives regarding his possible involvement in these crimes.

"This is an on-going investigation," said San Leandro Police Lieutenant Isaac Benabou. "Our detectives are working with neighboring law enforcement in an attempt to identify the suspects in these violent carjackings."

Investigators are asking anyone with information regarding these crimes to please contact the San Leandro Police Department at 510-577-2740.
