Investigators arrest Matthew Alferez on multiple counts of armed robbery

DATE/TIME: Wednesday, April 15, 2019 / 2:55 p.m.

INCIDENT: PC 211 – Armed Robbery

LOCATION: 7257 Sterling Avenue, Highland

SUSPECT: Matthew Alferez, 36-year-old resident of Phelan

VICTIM: Cell Zone Wireless

SUMMARY:
On Wednesday, April 15, 2019, at about 2:55 p.m., deputies assigned to the Highland Police Department were dispatched to the Cell Zone Wireless store when a caller reported they were robbed at gunpoint. During the investigation, deputies determined the suspect entered the store, produced a handgun and robbed the victim of cash. The suspect was described as a Hispanic male adult wearing a gray long sleeve shirt, blue jeans and white shoes with distinct tattoos on his neck. The suspect fled the location in a dark older model sedan.
Through an investigation, the suspect was identified as Matthew Alferez, a documented gang member. Investigators learned Alferez was responsible for an armed robbery at Joe’s Liquor Store in the city of Redlands on April 18, 2019. Alferez also attempted to rob a Chevron gas station in San Bernardino on April 28, 2019, however, the clerk was able to take the loaded .40mm handgun away from Alferez before he fled the location in a stolen vehicle.
On April 29, 2019, members of the San Bernardino County Special Enforcement Team arrested Alferez after he left a residence on the 1100 block of Merada Road in the city of San Bernardino. Investigators found .40mm ammunition and a large quantity of suspected methamphetamine inside Alferez’s vehicle.
Alferez was arrested and booked into the Central Detention Center on multiple counts of armed robbery with a bail set at $100,000.00. Alferez is scheduled to appear in the Superior Court of San Bernardino on May 1, 2019 to be arraigned for the charges.
Investigators are releasing Alferez’s booking photograph because they developed information that leads them to believe there are possibly robbery victims that have not been identified and/or did not report the crimes.
