Wilmington Police announce traffic restrictions for April 28 Delaware Running Festival

Traffic restrictions will be in place on Sunday, April 28 as the 16th Annual Delaware Marathon Running Festival is held in Wilmington. The event, which will proceed rain or shine, includes a full- and half-marathon, as well as a 4-person team relay, 5K run, and a kid’s fun run.

Participants will gather at the Tubman Garrett Riverfront Park along the Christina Riverfront for all five races.  The full marathon, half marathon, and the team relay all kick off at 7 a.m. The 5K begins at 7:30 a.m. with the Kids Fun Run starting shortly thereafter, at 7:35 a.m. All races will end at Tubman Garrett Riverfront Park. The new 26.2-mile marathon course will incorporate the Jack A. Markell Trail between Wilmington and New Castle.

On Sunday morning starting at 6:30 a.m., street closures and lane restrictions will take effect throughout the city. They are as follows:

  • South Market Street (U.S. Route 13) at Martin Luther King Boulevard will be closed to southbound traffic with no access to the South Market Street Bridge until 1 p.m. The turn lane on Martin Luther King Boulevard for South Market Street will be closed, as will the lane between King Street and Market Street on Martin Luther King Boulevard.

  • Southbound traffic on King Street toward South Market Street will be redirected west onto Wilmington Boulevard. The easternmost lane of King Street (left lane) will be closed for traffic from 13th Street to Martin Luther King Boulevard. Prior to 13th Street, the westernmost lane of King Street (right lane) will be closed to traffic from South Park Drive to 13th  Street, where runners will cross over to the east side of the roadway.

  • Front Street from Walnut Street to Church Street will be closed from 6 a.m. until approximately 8 a.m.  4th Street will have one lane closed from Church Street to Poplar Street on the westbound side. Spruce Street will be closed at 5th Street, and traffic will be redirected onto 5th Street.

  • The westernmost lane (right lane) of Walnut Street will be closed from 4th Street to 16th Street, while the southernmost lane (left lane) of 16th Street will be closed from Walnut Street to Market Street. The Market Street Bridge will be closed to southbound traffic at 18th Street and motorists will be detoured up 18th Street to the Washington Street Bridge. This closure will remain in effect until 10:30 a.m. The Brandywine Park area also will be closed to vehicular traffic on North Park Drive and South Park Drive until 10:30 a.m.

  • Lovering Avenue will be closed between Rodney and DuPont Streets. Kentmere Parkway westbound will be closed to vehicular traffic between Union Street and Bancroft Parkway. Bancroft Parkway will be restricted from Kentmere Parkway to 9th Street and cross traffic will be controlled by police officers.

  • Wawaset Park traffic will be restricted to local residents only, and 9th Street will be closed from Woodlawn Avenue to Lincoln Street. Union Street and Lincoln Street will both have lane restrictions from 9th Street to 4th Street. Traffic will flow but be restricted on both streets, and the lane restrictions will continue until 10:30 a.m.

Run participants will be escorted by Wilmington Police, so motorists should be cautious of runners on the streets and expect some delays in these areas for much of the morning.  The delays in the majority of the city will be finished by 10:30 a.m. Residents who are affected by the street closures will be assisted in getting to their homes during the event with assistance from the police. More than 2,000 runners representing 39 states, the District of Columbia, and four foreign countries are expected to take part in Sunday’s races.
