Wilmington Police seize gun, drugs during traffic stop
Wilmington Police have arrested two men after a gun and drugs were found during a traffic stop.
On April 17 at approximately 5:30 p.m., members of the Safe Streets Unit were on patrol in the 400 block of West 7th Street when they observed a vehicle make a turn without signaling. Police pulled the vehicle over and removed both occupants after an odor of marijuana was detected coming from the vehicle.
Police recovered a loaded 9mm firearm along with 2.9 grams of crack cocaine and a small quantity of marijuana.
In addition to the traffic violation, police have charged the driver, 35-year-old Michael Griffin, with the following:
- Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited
- Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
- Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon
- Possession of Marijuana
He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $30,001 cash-only bail.
Police also charged the passenger, 35-year-old James Watson, with possession of crack cocaine, as well as the following:
- Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited
- Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
- Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon
Watson was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $24,250 cash-only bail.
“Our officers engage in proactive patrols on a daily basis, and their vigilance leads to the recovery of illegal guns and drugs,” said Master Sgt. William Schmid of the Drug, Organized Crime and Vice Division.
