Officer Involved Shooting in 2900 block of Georgetown Rd

INCIDENT TYPE: Officer Involved Shooting

INCIDENT LOCATION: 2900 blk of Georgetown Rd

The following information is preliminary and may change as the investigation progresses.

INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s (IMPD) Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) investigating after an Officer Involved Shooting (OIS) on the city’s northwest side.

Just after 12 p.m. on 04/19/2019, officers and Violent Crime Unit (VCU) detectives with the IMPD were attempting to stop a wanted violent felon, later identified as Jarius Moore (29), in a parking lot in the 2900 block of Georgetown Rd when an OIS occurred. Moore had a warrant for his arrest related to the shooting of a security guard on 03/27/2019 in the 3900 block of N High School Rd (IP190030950). VCU detectives had been tracking Moore and were attempting to take him into custody when the OIS occurred.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Moore was parked in a parking lot when a marked IMPD car pulled up to his vehicle to stop him. Moore attempted to drive out of the parking lot when detectives pulled up to stop him. Moore then rammed the detective’s car and got out of his vehicle to flee on foot. However, he almost immediately turned back, reached into his car into the center console and retrieved a firearm. A detective, attempting to take Moore into custody, observed the suspect with the firearm and fired upon the suspect, striking him. Detectives and officers on-scene immediately began providing first aid to Moore prior to EMS arrival. EMS personnel transported to Moore to a local area hospital in serious condition. Moore is expected to survive. There was a passenger in Moore’s car who was uninjured in the incident and could face charges.

Members of IMPD’s CIRT responded and are in the process of taking formal statements from all known witnesses.  If additional witnesses exist that have not yet talked with investigators, we urge them to call the IMPD Homicide Office at 317.327.3475.

Moore had an active warrant for battery with a deadly weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm by Serious Violent Felon, theft with a prior conviction. Additional charges will be forthcoming as it relates to this incident.

The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to the scene to collect forensic evidence.  The shooting is being investigated by IMPD’s CIRT. A separate and independent internal investigation will be conducted, as is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting, by IMPD’s Internal Affairs Unit to ensure compliance with departmental policy. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office is involved and will be consulted throughout the investigative process. The involved detective has been placed on Administrative Leave as the investigation is conducted and will have access to IMPD’s wellness program for coping assistance.

Anyone with information about this incident should call the IMPD Homicide Office at 317.327.3475 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317.262.8477 or (TIPS).  Citizens can also download the mobile P3tips app for Apple or Android phones to submit a mobile tip, or go to www.CrimeTips.org to submit a web tip.
