Wilmington Police find open container, concealed handgun during traffic stop

Wilmington Police have arrested a 50-year-old man found with a gun and an open container during a traffic stop.

On April 16 at approximately 8 p.m., members of the Safe Streets Unit were on patrol in the 500 block of West 26th Street when they observed 50-year-old Derrick Jones driving a vehicle that failed to stop at a stop sign. Police pulled the vehicle over, and officers observed an open container of alcohol in the vehicle.

Upon further investigation, police located a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun concealed under the driver’s seat

Jones has been charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon as well as for the open container and failure to stop at a stop sign. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released on his own recognizance pending further proceedings.

Captain George Pigford, commander of the Drug, Organized Crime and Vice Division, commended officers for their vigilance while on patrol.

“Our Safe Streets Unit works tirelessly to take guns and drugs off of the streets, and this arrest is a prime example of their efforts on a daily basis,” said Captain Pigford.
