SF Earthquake Anniversary
This is a preparedness message from AC Alert. Today, Alameda County is commemorating the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. We encourage people to start preparing for earthquakes and other disasters by obtaining items for your emergency kit and start your family emergency plan. Below is a sample of what should go into your home emergency kit. While store-bought emergency kits are convenient, building your own kit can be a rewarding experience, as well as potentially cheaper. Also, keep in mind that store-bought kits do not take into account food allergies and will not have your medication; all the more reason to build your own kit.
Water is a critical resource to stockpile before an earthquake or natural disaster strikes. Below is some information on how to safely store water in your home. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that you should store at least 1 gallon of water per day for each person and each pet. You should consider storing more water in for hotter temperatures, for pregnant women, and for persons who are at-risk of getting sick. Try to store at least a week's supply of water if possible. After you have bought water, make sure you know when that specific set will expire; write in large letters the expiration date so you know when it is time to replace that set.
