Citizens assist deputies in identifying a man responsible for multiple burglaries

DATE/TIME: April 4th, 2019 / 11:38 p.m.

INCIDENT: Burglary, Possession of Stolen Property

LOCATION: Lum Lane/ Highway 247, Landers

SUSPECT: Robert Jones, 34- year-old resident of Landers

VICTIM: Multiple victims from the Landers area


SUMMARY:

On Wednesday, April 10, 2019, detectives from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Morongo Basin Station, were contacted by several citizens in the Landers area. The citizens had several reports of theft in Landers. The reports of included vehicles, gasoline and grand theft from unoccupied cabins. Citizens also reported several thousands of dollars of damage to property that occurred during the thefts. Many of the crimes were unreported at the time of the occurrence. Through investigation it was found the suspect used an ATV and a side by side UTV to steal from the victims. Concerned citizens provided detectives with a photograph of a gray and black Yamaha Rhino at the scene of several crimes. Citizens identified Robert Jones as being the driver of the Rhino. Deputies identified the Rhino as matching a grand theft auto, which occurred several weeks prior in Johnson Valley.

On Saturday, April 13, 2019, deputies responded to a burglary call in Landers. The victim had located some of his property in plain sight at Jones’s residence. Deputies contacted Jones and recovered the victim’s property and located an ATV. The ATV was found to be stolen out of the Rimrock area in January of 2019. The Rhino remains outstanding and is believed to be stored in the Landers area.

Jones was arrested for possession of stolen property and placed on a probation hold at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.
