Severe weather possible Thursday Apr. 18

According to the National Weather Service, there is an enhanced risk of severe weather and potential for heavy rainfall in the New Orleans area on Thursday, April 18, 2019.  

Storms are expected to move through the metro area throughout the afternoon and evening on Thursday. Severe weather threats include damaging wind gusts, tornadoes, and large hail. Average rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are expected, however locally higher totals will be possible where heavy rains or multiple bands of thunderstorms move over the same area. These rainfall amounts could cause flash flooding.

Prepare for a storm

Clean your property and street

  • Remove debris from gutters and downspouts.
  • Clear debris from in front of catch basins.
  • Prune trees and shrubs.
  • Bring outdoor furniture and decorations inside.
  • Secure or bring garbage bins inside.
  • Move possessions to your highest floor.
  • Photograph your property for insurance purposes.

During thunderstorms & lightning

Seek shelter from wind & lightning

  • Get inside a home, building, or car.
  • You're much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
  • During a tornado warning, go to an interior room on the lowest level, like a closet or bathroom. Stay away from windows, doors, and outside walls.

Avoid contact with electricity & plumbing

  • Don't touch electrical equipment or cords that are plugged in.
  • Don't wash your hands, shower, or wash dishes. Plumbing and bathroom fixtures can conduct electricity.

Avoid flood waters

  • Move to higher ground.
  • Don’t walk or drive through flood waters. 
  • If water rises around your car, abandon the car immediately.
  • Call 911 to report street flooding.
