Officer Hilda Velasco is a five-year law enforcement veteran. She grew up in Sacramento, graduated with a sociology degree from San Jose State University and has always been a dog lover. Officer Velasco was initially hired as a police officer with the City of Watsonville and joined SCPD approximately 1.5 years ago.
Kairo is joining SCPD’s K-9 team after extensive training. He is a one and a half year old German Shepard from the Czech Republic. Kairo was purchased as a result of a generous anonymous donation to SCPD’s K-9 program.
Police officers with a K-9 partner supplement the Patrol Division to conduct traffic stops and respond to assistance calls or emergencies, and also help to locate individuals, contraband and to apprehend criminal offenders. Canine teams also serve as a Department representative at public engagements, conduct security sweeps prior to dignitary visits, board meetings and/or special events, and respond to call-outs on an as-needed basis. Kairo possess many skills, including the ability to track individuals or detect illegal substances, such as explosives.
