Cases of Community Interest

Every month, there are over 300 crimes (UCR Part 1 crimes) occurring in the City of Berkeley.  Below are some of those cases that have occurred over the past few days that involve weapons, violence or incidents that people have asked us about.

Update from a Previous Laptop Theft
On January 26th at 5:20 pm, a man (age 33) was sitting in front of Passione Caffe (91 Shattuck Square) with his laptop in front of him.  A suspect approached the man, grabbed the man’s laptop and ran away—westbound on Addison Street.  After investigating this incident, detectives were able to identify the suspect (a 20 year old Richmond man).  The suspect was arrested on April 4th on suspicion of felony theft.

Laptop Theft
On April 1st at about 6 pm, a man (age 49) was seated inside Berkeley Espresso (1900 Shattuck Avenue) typing on his laptop when a suspect approached him.  The suspect grabbed the man’s laptop and ran out of the store—running away with a second suspect.  Witnesses described the suspect as a Black male, 18-22 years old, 5’6” to 5’8” tall, with a slim build, and wearing a black hooded top with black pants.  Witnesses described the second suspect as a Hispanic male, 18-22 years old, 5’6” to 5’8” tall, with a heavy build and wearing a multicolored jacket.

Cell Phone Theft
On April 1st at about 8 pm, a woman (age 20) was walking on the 2400 block of Bancroft Way using her cell phone.  As she was walking, a suspect approached the woman and grabbed her cell phone from her hands.  The suspect then rode away on a skateboard.  Witnesses described the suspect as an unknown race male, wearing a black hooded top and shorts.

Cell Phone Theft
On April 1st at 8:24 pm, a woman (age 22) was walking on Allston Way (near Shattuck Avenue) with her cell phone in her hands.  While she was walking, a suspect approached the woman and grabbed the cell phone from her hands.  The suspect was last seen running away westbound on Center Street.  Witnesses described the suspect as an unknown race male, about 5’6” to 5’8” tall, with a thin build, wearing a black hooded top, dark pants and white shoes.

Street Robbery
On April 2nd at 11:02 pm, a woman (age 19) was walking on the 2400 block of Parker Street when a suspect approached her.  The suspect pointed a handgun at the woman and demanded her backpack (containing her laptop).  After taking the backpack, the suspect was last seen running eastbound on Parker Street.  Witnesses described the suspect as a Black male, in his 30’s, about 6’ tall, with a heavy build, wearing a black beanie cap, a black hooded top, light colored shirt and dark pants.

Laptop Theft
On April 3rd at 12:55 pm, a woman (age 22) was sitting inside Alchemy Collective Café (1741 Alcatraz Avenue) with her laptop on the table in front of her when two suspects ran into the café.  The suspects grabbed the woman’s laptop from the table and then ran out of the café.  Witnesses described one of the suspects as a Black male, in his 20’s, about 6’ tall, wearing a mask.

Auto Burglar arrested
On April 6th at about 8 am, a resident of the 1800 block of Alcatraz Avenue heard the sound of his vehicle starting outside.  When the resident confronted the suspect, the suspect rode away on a bicycle.  About ten minutes later, an officer spotted the suspect rummaging through a vehicle parked several blocks away.  When officers searched the suspect, they found burglary tools drug paraphernalia.  The suspect [a 42 year old man (address unknown)] was arrested on suspicion of attempted vehicle theft, theft, possession of burglary tools, possession of narcotics paraphernalia and for violating his probation.

Cell phone Thefts
On April 6th at 4:48 pm, two women (age 18 and 20) were waiting for the bus on the corner of College Avenue and Woolsey Street using their cell phones when two suspects approached them.  The suspects grabbed the cell phones from both of the women’s hands, ran to a nearby vehicle and drove off.  Witnesses described the suspects as:

  • Suspect #1: Black male, adult, 5’8” tall, medium build, with short black hair and wearing a black t-shirt.
  • Suspect #2: Black male, 28-30 years old, 5’10” tall, with a skinny build, black hair and wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and ripped jeans.
  • Suspect #3: Hispanic male, 18-20 years old, with a buzz cut hair style and wearing a white t-shirt.

Laptop Robbery and Theft
On April 7th at 6:44 pm, two suspects entered Sack’s Coffee House (2701 College Avenue) and took two laptops.  One of the suspects threw a cup of lemonade in a 22 year old woman’s face before taking her laptop.  When a group of people ran out of the store after the first suspect, a second suspect took another laptop that was left unattended by one of the people who ran after the first suspect.  No description was available.

When you are out during darkness, please consider travelling through well-lit areas or travelling with a friend.  When travelling with a personal electronic device—such as a cell phone or laptop, consider keeping it out of sight when possible.  If you see something that you think is suspicious, be sure to say something by notifying the nearest police agency.
