East Chicago Water & Fire Departments will be implementing a Fire Hydrant Maintenance Program during the months of April and May, 2019
Fire Hydrant Maintenance Program
As the City of East Chicago’s commitment to improve and maximize its water distribution system for future generations, the East Chicago Water and Fire Departments will be implementing a Fire Hydrant Maintenance Program during the months of April through May 2019. This program will entail inspecting, documenting, and maintaining approximately 585 fire hydrants throughout the City. This program will ensure that we comply with the standards and every hydrant within our City can be expected to perform properly and reliably whenever it may be need in an emergency.
Fire hydrants are very important components in a water distribution system. Not only do they provide fire suppression, but serve many other useful functions as well. Hydrants are routinely used for flushing water mains, testing chlorine residuals, street and sewer cleaning, and providing water for construction purposes. However, fire hydrants must be operable and capable of providing adequate fire-flow at all times as that is their primary function. By methodically inspecting all the hydrants in a distribution system, problems can be identified and corrected before they become catastrophic.
