April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Please join Hopeful Horizons at their upcoming "Take Back the Night" events

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office would like to take the opportunity to help promote awareness of this most important issue.

Sexual assault is a wide-spread public health and safety issue. Sexual violence happens in every community, affecting people of all genders and ages. Victims of sexual assault often experience short-term consequences, including guilt, shame, fear, shock and feelings of isolation. They may also experience long-term health risks and behaviors, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, depression, pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

Hopeful Horizons is the Children’s Advocacy and Rape Crisis Center that provides services to victims of sexual assault in Beaufort County. The primary focus of this year’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month campaign is "Consent" #Iask. There are several ways for you to show your support.

Use the color teal to promote awareness: Tie a teal ribbon to your car. Wear a teal ribbon or teal-colored clothing. Be sure to explain that the teal color is for Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Share Information on Social Media: Share information and graphics supporting Sexual Assault Awareness Month on your social media pages: Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Attend Hopeful Horizon events: You can attend events hosted by Hopeful Horizons throughout the month of April, such as "Take Back the Night" on Friday, April 5, 2019 from 6 to 7:00 p.m. at the Jarvis Creek Park on Hilton Head Island and on Friday, April 26, 2019 from 6 to 7:00 p.m. at the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park in Beaufort.

Please show your support. For more information on upcoming events, visit the Hopeful Horizons website www.hopefulhorizons.org
