Wilmington Police investigation leads to two indictments in 2016 homicide

A Wilmington Police investigation has yielded two indictments in a 2016 homicide case.

On July 18, 2016 at approximately 11:58 p.m., police responded to the area of 11th and Bennett Streets in reference to a shots fired complaint. Arriving units found 15-year-old Tyreek Scott suffering from several gunshot wounds. Scott was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The case was assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division, and in late 2018, Detective Robert Fox was able to identify and interview several witnesses who were unknown during the initial investigation. He developed 19-year-old Dai’yann Wharton and 21-year-old Isaiah Baird as suspects.

On April 1, Wharton and Baird were indicted by a New Castle County Grand Jury on the following offenses:

  • Murder (First Degree)
  • Conspiracy (First Degree)
  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited

Both suspects were processed on the above charges and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution.

Captain Malcolm Stoddard, commander of the WPD Criminal Investigations Division, applauded the diligent investigative efforts that led to this indictment.

“These indictments are representative of the persistence that our detectives bring to each of their cases,” said Captain Stoddard. “These efforts have allowed us to close this case, and more importantly, to bring justice to the family of Tyreek Scott.”
