Investigation - Unit Block of Vandever Avenue
Wilmington Police are investigating an incident involving a City of Wilmington sanitation truck that took place shortly after 7 a.m. in the unit block of Vandever Avenue.
A preliminary investigation indicates that sanitation workers were loading refuse into their truck and began to compress the trash. At that time, one of the workers noticed a tank was in the truck, and as the compressor came down it caused the tank to explode.
One worker, a 40-year-old male, sustained a chest wound and was transported by helicopter to the hospital. He was conscious and alert on scene and is listed in critical condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
Another worker, a 42-year-old male, was transported to the hospital by ambulance for minor injuries.
This incident remains under investigation and we will release further details when possible.
