On March 15 at approximately 9:30 p.m., police responded to a residence in the 300 block of Porter Street regarding a burglary that had taken place. Patrol officers conducted a thorough investigation and developed 35-year-old Mary Steele as a suspect, and the case was referred to the Criminal Investigations Division.
Detective Joseph Wicks continued the investigation, and on March 19 he authored a search warrant for a property in the 100 block of East 24th Street. That warrant was served on March 21, and police located the defendant and took her into custody.
Steele has been charged with:
- Burglary (Second Degree)
- Aggravated Menacing
- Assault (Third Degree)
Steele was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released on her own recognizance pending further proceedings.
Lieutenant Gary Tabor, deputy commander of the WPD Criminal Investigations Division, applauded the efforts of both patrol officers and detectives in this case.
“This investigation highlights the collaborative approach we take in our investigations,” he said. “Patrol officers worked diligently to develop a suspect, and worked with detectives to make an arrest and close the case.”
