OFFICERS ARREST SEVEN JUVENILES FOR THEFT RELATED CHARGES AFTER FOOT PURSUIT

SMPD officers were called to a report of suspicious activity involving a vehicle. Seven juveniles fled from police on their arrival, and the vehicle was discovered to be stolen. SMPD located and arrested the juveniles after an extensive search.

San Mateo, CA – On Friday, March 22, 2019, at 12:22 a.m., San Mateo Police Department officers responded directly from the recent arrests of the two garbage-fire arson suspects to the first block of South Fremont Street on reports of suspicious people rummaging through a car. As officers were arriving on scene, they saw multiple juveniles running from the vehicle, which was reported stolen out of Redwood City. Police officers flooded the neighborhood and a systematic search lead to the arrest of seven juveniles associated with the stolen vehicle.

Fortunately, no officers or juveniles were injured during the juveniles’ reckless act of running from police. Several of the juveniles were well known by San Mateo PD’s Crime Reduction Unit from prior gang involvement and other criminal activity. One of the suspects cut off his court ordered GPS monitoring device during the chase. The juvenile suspects were extremely uncooperative, fought with officers, and lied about their names. SMPD officers demonstrated restraint, remained professional, and ensured the juveniles were cared for during their detention.

This case is a perfect example of if you See Something, Say Something – YOU are our extra eyes and ears! Crimes occur within a matter of seconds, therefore if you see a suspicious vehicle or person contact SMPD immediately – trust your instincts. Please contact your area lieutenant if you’d like to invite them to your next neighborhood watch meeting. https://tinyurl.com/SMPD-Lieutenants-Area-Map.

As SMPD tackles these investigations, we ask our community to safeguard yourselves with these tips:
Lock all vehicle doors - Try setting a reminder alarm on your phone at 9PM.
Don’t leave ANYTHING in your car - You read that right. Thieves are now searching consoles and glove compartments if they don’t see GPS devices, laptops/tablets, or personal bags in plain view.
Invest in Surveillance – We are solving more cases thanks to video surveillance. Our officers regularly canvass for available surveillance and you can help us by notifying SMPD of your cameras. www.tinyurl.com/SMPDNest.
