During the past two months, detectives from the Sheriffs Gang Unit and Oxnard Police Department conducted investigations into several gang-related shootings. Through the investigation, detectives learned it was the same suspects committing these violent and felonious crimes throughout the various jurisdictions. The suspects were believed to actively “hunt” for victims during their violent spree.
On March 15 and 17, 2019, with the assistance of the Oxnard Police Department and the Sheriff’s Major Crime’s Bureau, search warrants were executed at various locations in Oxnard. During the execution of the search warrants, detectives seized 3 firearms, ammunition, and gang indicia resulting in the arrest of 5 suspects.
Jose Castanon was booked into custody at the Ventura County Sheriff’s Main Jail for two counts of 664/187(a) PC - Attempt Homicide, two counts of 182(a)(1) PC- Conspiracy to Commit a Crime, 246 PC- Shooting at Occupied Building, 27545 PC-Unlawful transfer of a Firearm, 25850(a) PC- Carrying a loaded firearm on One’s Person, 25850(c)(6) Carrying a loaded
unregistered firearm, and 186.22(a) PC-Street Terrorism. Castanon is currently being held on a $1,000,000 bail.
Sergio Ramos was booked into custody at the Ventura County Sheriff’s Main Jail for charges of 664/187(a) PC - Attempt Homicide, 182(a)(1) PC- Conspiracy to Commit a Crime, two counts of 29800(a)(1) PC- Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, 27545 PC-Unlawful transfer of a Firearm, 30305(a)(1) PC- Possession of Ammunition by a Felon, and 186.22(a) PC-Street Terrorism. Ramos is currently being held on a $1,000,000 bail.
Manuel Alcala was booked into custody at the Ventura County Sheriff’s Main Jail for 664/187(a) PC - Attempt Homicide, 182(a)(1) PC- Conspiracy to Commit a Crime, and 186.22(a) PC Street Terrorism. Alcala is currently being held on a $1,000,000 bail.
Jose Tellez was booked into custody at the Ventura County Sheriff’s Main Jail for 245(a)(2) PC – Assault with a Firearm, 182(a)(1) PC- Conspiracy to Commit a Crime, and 186.22(a) PC Street Terrorism. Alcala is currently being held on a $100,000 bail.
The male juvenile was arrested and lodged at Juvenile Justice Center for 664/187(a) PC - Attempt Homicide, 182(a)(1) PC- Conspiracy to Commit a Crime, and 186.22(a) PC Street Terrorism.
While at a one of the search warrant locations, Gerard Ortiz was also contacted and arrested for an outstanding local warrant.
