Wilmington Police interrupted a burglary in progress and arrested a man who jumped into the Brandywine River to avoid apprehension.
 
On March 15 at approximately 5:37 a.m., a police officer on proactive patrol in the unit block of Concord Avenue observed a suspicious person in an area where previous burglaries had been reported. The officer witnessed the suspect loading copper material in the back of a vehicle.
 
When officers made contact with the suspect, he provided a false name before fleeing on foot towards Superfine Lane and jumping into the Brandywine River in an effort to avoid apprehension.
 
Officers were able to place 44-year-old Jullian Mallard in custody without further incident. An investigation found that Mallard had removed three air conditioning units, valued at $1,500 each, from the property.
 
Mallard has been charged with the following:
 

• Attempted Theft Over $1,500
• Criminal Impersonation
• Resisting Arrest
• Criminal Trespass (Third Degree)

 
Mallard was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $3,001 unsecured bail for the above charges, as well as $6,000 secured bail for prior charges – attempted escape after conviction and conspiracy (second degree) – for which he was wanted.
 
“This was a crime in progress that we were able to interrupt,” said Chief Robert J. Tracy. “I applaud the work of our patrol officers staying on top of crime reports in their area, observing suspicious activity and acting on it.”
