Sheriff Richard J Behnke reports on 03/16/2019 at approximately 2143 hundred hours, Deputies responded to an injury crash. The crash occurred at the intersection of US 12 and Gumwood Rd., Milton Township, Cass County Michigan. The initial investigation showed Amaya Huffer, an 18 year old Buchanan resident, failed to yield the right of way for an eastbound vehicle on US 12 driven by Adam Rangel Jr, a 56 year old Buchanan resident. When Huffer entered the intersection from Gumwood Rd., Rangel collided into the drivers side of the vehicle, then crossed the US 12 before coming to a stop in a set of woods on the north side of US 12. Rangel was evaluated by SMCAS Emergency Medical Personnel and transported by ambulance to Memorial Hospital. Huffer was evaluated by SMCAS Emergency Medical Personnel and released at the scene. Seat belts were worn and alcohol / drugs are not believed to be contributing factors. This incident remains under investigation. The Sheriff’s Deputies were assisted by Niles Charter Township Fire Department, Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service, and Ontwa Township Edwardsburg Police Department.
